Term 1 - Overview
Term 1
We have a busy first term ahead in Ospreys! Below you can find a little more about what we will be learning and some of the experiences the children will have this term.
Maths
In Maths, we will begin the year by developing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 10,000. The children will explore the value of each digit, compare and order numbers, round numbers and develop their confidence when working with larger numbers.
We will then move on to addition and subtraction, building towards using formal written methods with 4-digit numbers. A particular focus will be on understanding exchanging rather than simply remembering a method, as well as using estimation and other strategies to check whether an answer is reasonable.
English
Our English learning this term is inspired by Tuesday by David Wiesner, a brilliant picture book which tells much of its unusual story through illustrations.
We will use the book as a starting point for developing descriptive writing, with our main outcome being a setting description. The children will explore how carefully chosen vocabulary can help a reader imagine a setting, thinking about what might be seen, heard and even smelt.
BEAR
Our BEAR book this term is Anglo-Saxon Boy by Tony Bradman. The story follows Magnus, a young Anglo-Saxon boy, as his life is changed by the events surrounding the struggle for the English throne in 1066. Through his adventures, the children will experience life in Anglo-Saxon England and follow Magnus as he finds himself caught up in one of the most famous moments in English history.
RE
Our big question in RE this term is:
“What is it like to follow God?”
Through this unit, the children will explore what commitment means and why people choose to make commitments. We will look at stories and teachings from Christianity and consider how a Christian's faith might influence the choices they make and the way they live their life. There will also be plenty of opportunity for the children to discuss their own ideas and listen respectfully to the views of others.
PSHE
Our PSHE focus is All About Me and My Relationships.
At the beginning of a new school year, this gives us an important opportunity to think about ourselves, our relationships with others and how we can make our classroom a positive place to be. We will develop skills including communication, cooperation, recognising and managing emotions, resolving disagreements and building healthy relationships.
There will be lots of discussion and opportunities for the children to reflect on how their actions can affect other people.
Enrichment - Forest School
Our enrichment this term is Forest School, which takes place every Monday afternoon.
Forest School gives the children the chance to learn outside the classroom through practical experiences, exploration and play. Across the term, they will have opportunities to take part in a wide range of activities while learning how to use the outdoor environment safely and responsibly.
An important part of Forest School is the skills that develop along the way. The children will work on teamwork, problem-solving, resilience and independence, while also becoming more confident at assessing risks and trying things that may initially feel challenging.
Music
Every Friday, the Ospreys have a ukulele lesson. These lessons will continue throughout the year, allowing the children to build their musical skills gradually rather than learning an instrument for just one term.
We will begin with the basics of holding and playing the ukulele before building up a repertoire of chords and songs. As the year progresses, the children will develop their sense of rhythm, coordination, listening skills and confidence performing with others. Most importantly, we want them to enjoy making music together!
PE
This term, our PE learning includes swimming and netball. Our PE days are a Tuesday and a Wednesday for Term 1.
