Term 1

First stop - Important Information

Our PE will be on Monday and Tuesday in term 1.  During term 1 we have Football and Fitness. Please come to school in school PE kit.

Homework

Homework will always be set and checked on a Friday

Maths - all children will be given maths arithmetic homework each week. TT Rockstars will still need to be practiced during each week to ensure fluency of facts.

Reading - all children will have one reading task each week.  These need to be brought in every Friday so we can mark them.

Spellings- spellings will be an important part of our learning in Year 5.  We will have to practice every day at school.  Children will be expected to show a week's worth of practice in their homework book every Friday. There will be three rules to learn each term and also a list of stand alone words that the Government has set for all children in Year 5 and 6.  We will work through the full list to help make Year 6 easier.

Homework will begin on Friday 5th September 2025.

Our Learning for Term 1

Why do people migrate?

We will be exploring the topic of migration and asking why people move from one place to another. What does migration mean and how has it shaped different places such as the UK and Mexico? Why do some people choose to move while others are forced to leave their homes? What are the differences between short-term and long-term migration, and between national and international journeys?

We will discover the reasons behind migration – the push and pull factors – and think about both the advantages and disadvantages it can bring. We will also learn about the difference between a migrant and a refugee, and how these movements of people have changed communities around the world.

As geographers, we will investigate, question and develop our understanding of why people migrate and the impact it has on our lives today.

Science - Earth and Space!

We will be learning about the Solar System and the position of Earth within it. The children will learn the names of the planets in order of their distance from the Sun and understand that the Sun is at the centre of the Solar System. They will describe how the Earth moves in relation to the Sun and how this causes day and night.

The children will also study the Moon, developing an understanding of its phases and how it moves in relation to the Earth. As scientists, they will plan and carry out an investigation to answer the question: What happens to the Sun during the daytime?

This unit will help the children build a clear understanding of the Solar System and the movements that affect life on Earth.

Structural Designers

For our first design technology unit we will be understanding the children will develop their design and sewing skills by learning different stitching techniques. They will design and create a textile product, selecting suitable materials and evaluating their finished work.

  English

In English this term, we will be reading Where Once We Stood, a text that captures the story of the first moon landing through the words of those who experienced it. The children will use this book to inspire their own writing, developing an understanding of how language can be used to describe and record real events.

Our writing outcomes will include creating an exploration narrative, where the children imagine what it might have been like to take part in a space mission, and a formal report about the moon landing. These pieces of work will allow the children to build both their creative and factual writing skills while deepening their knowledge of this historic event.

RE - Guidance from above

In RE we will be learning more about Christianity.  As part of our work we will be holding debates, creating artwork in response to certain aspects, writing our opinions and learning more about what Christians believe.  We will discuss how this learning links to our Christian Values as a school.

Maths

In this unit, the children will be recapping and building on their understanding of place value. They will practise reading, writing and ordering numbers, explore the value of each digit, and work with numbers up to 1,000,000. They will then use this knowledge to compare, round and solve problems with confidence.

PSHE and British Values

We will be exploring what makes each of us unique. The children will think about the different parts of identity, including our interests, beliefs, experiences and the communities we belong to. They will learn to appreciate their own identity and understand and respect the identities of others.
