Term 5

🦉    Term 5!    🦉

What an exciting term we have ahead of us!

Our theme for this term is,

🔍 Hidden Worlds! 🔎

We will be developing our understanding of History through answering the question, What happened to the hidden village in Rutland? Starting on our doorstep and using a variety of historical sources, we will look at how the village of Ketton has changed over the last 60 years and then move on to looking at significant changes in the wider area of Rutland.

In Science, we will be answering the question, What is growing all around me? We will be identifying and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants, (including deciduous and evergreen trees) before moving on to identifying, describing and comparing their basic structures. We will also be planting seeds and keeping a diary of their growth.

🌻

Our work in English this term continues to be inspired by the book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak. We will be reading a variety of non-chronological reports and investigating their features. Once we have fully explored this text type, we will use our knowledge to create our own non-chronological reports about the imaginary creatures found in the story. Throughout the unit we will consolidate our understanding of how to write varied and exciting sentences and build on our knowledge of spelling conventions.

In Maths, we will finish off our unit on measures and then move on to learn about the concepts of multiplication and division. We will learn how to count in 2s, 5s ad 10s as well as how to solve problems by adding equal groups and grouping and sharing. Later in the term, we will move learn about simple fractions.

In RE, we will be thinking about the question, What makes some places special and sacred to believers? We will think about places that are important or special to us and then look at special places of worship for Christians and Jewish people.

We have an exciting challenge to complete in our Design and Technology unit of learning this term - the Owls will be designing and creating a healthy snack for the Wild Things! We will be thinking about what is meant by the phrase ‘healthy eating,’ learning about basic food hygiene practices and practising simple food-processing skills. Our final task will be to test and evaluate our products!

In IT we will be developing our understanding of computer programming using our floor robots. We will learn how to use the command buttons to move a robot in different directions and then how we can create a simple sequence of commands to make the robot follow a more complex route.

This term PE days will be on a Monday and a Thursday. The Owls will be learning simple athletic skills and actions such as running, throwing and jumping and applying these to a range of activities. Please come to school wearing your PE kit on these days and remember to make sure that this is suitable for the weather conditions as whenever possible PE will take place outside.
