Term 1

Term 1

We start the year by being History Detectives. We will explore the Anglo-Saxons and the Scots/Picts in order to answer the question ‘What happened after the Romans left?’ Our investigations will culminate in an immersive and inspiring Anglo-Saxon workshop led by John Stubbings from Portals to the Past, to consolidate the Ospreys’ learning.

We will continue with this historical theme in English by exploring the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf with a focus on how authors construct characters through speech and action. We will also be looking at Kennings as Beowulf is littered with wonderful examples. This Term we have a fascinating class read, Anglo-Saxon Boy by Tony Bradman - the story of one Anglo-Saxon boy's journey to the Battle of Hastings in 1066: Key Stage 2 History brought to life as a battle-packed adventure.

In Maths we have a busy term! We will revisit and consolidate place value and learn how to add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of column addition and subtraction.  We will also be working hard at learning to recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12x12.

Science - What happens to my food? In order to answer this enquiry question the Ospreys will investigate the digestive system. They will conduct a comparative experiment looking into the importance of keeping our teeth healthy. During the course of their studies they will also construct and interpret a variety of food chains.

In RE the Ospreys will be exploring ‘What is it like to follow God?’ They will be looking a stories from the Old Testament which explains how the children of Israel, known as the People of God, show the benefits of having a relationship with God.

In IT the Ospreys  will apply their knowledge and understanding of networks, to appreciate the internet as a network of networks which need to be kept secure. They will learn that the World Wide Web is part of the internet and will be given opportunities to explore the World Wide Web for themselves in order to learn about who owns content and what they can access, add, and create. Finally, they will evaluate online content to decide how honest, accurate, or reliable it is, and understand the consequences of false information.

Samba is our focus in Music this Term. The Ospreys will be developing an understanding of how tempo and rhythm are used in other cultures. They will know how to combine and overlap different rhythms and use rhythm as an indicator of change in a rhythmic composition.

This Term in PE,  the Ospreys will be improving ‘ball on the ground’ skills. They will focus on skills of travel, travel with, send, chase, receive, avoid, dodge, attack, defend, and movement into/out of space. They will experience small-sided and modified competitive invasion games in order to apply these skills.

A busy term, I am sure you will agree – I can’t wait to get started! yes

Music - exploring stacatto notes and sustained notes using Morse Code to sound out our names.
